Believe it or not, I had real difficulty putting this blog together for you. I’ve been in the game for a year now and when I read about all of the tools of the trade used for affiliate marketing, it really blows my mind. It’s because nearly every tool of the trade I use for affiliate marketing is provided by my online marketing educator.
So, as a newbie affiliate marketer myself (yep, I am still a baby at this business) let’s take a look at what I do know are essential tools that you’ll need as a newbie affiliate marketer.
First things first. You need a product to promote. You may need to do some research here to find out what products and services you are willing to promote. I’m sure you’ll be wanting to promote products and services you align with and are passionate about.
I know I could not promote anything I do not believe in, no matter how much commission is offered.
At the moment I promote an online educator of online marketing who also provides various tools and resources needed to start and run your own online marketing business. My reason? I know that the education I promote could serve to give people time freedom and therefore allow them to do more of the things they desire to do – I’m definitely all for that! I could go on here as I am extremely passionate about the fact that as creative beings it is our birthright to be able to provide ourselves with a life we desire – but I’ll leave it at that.
O.K. What’s Next?
To create an affiliate marketing campaign you definitely need:
- a web host
- a domain
- a website.
I remember back when I first started my online course. The online teacher likened the website host to “the property your website is located on”. The web host allows your website to “live” on the internet so it can be accessed by people.
A Landing Page is a website. You would have seen mine after you clicked on one of my advertisements. It asked you to enter your email address and then “click” on a button so I could send you a 7-day video series. If you have no landing page, you have no ad. It, therefore, follows that if you have no web host, you have no landing page. So having a web host is absolutely essential.
The Cost: around $10 a month
Back to the property analogy. If your web host is the property your website is located on, the domain is your house address, or more specifically, your website address. To have a website address requires registration of any available domain name you choose. No two websites can have the exact same name (things would get pretty confusing otherwise). Registration is usually around $10 – $20 per year.
Now we come to the actual structure, rooms, and styling of your house. As far as building your website goes, there are many website builders out there. I personally used WordPress to build the website you are now on. WordPress is used by 26.6% of all websites in the world with the second most used website builder making up 2.8% of the world’s websites – there’s gotta be a tonne of reasons why WordPress outranks all other website builders out there so why look anywhere else?
WordPress, like many other website builders, is free and takes minutes to install, and, believe it or not, with the huge advancement that has occurred in the digital world, building your own website is not that hard – it’s just a matter of taking the time to do it. Yes, you could hire a professional to do it for you, but where’s the fun in that. Personally, I really like my website and enjoyed constructing it. It may not be to everyone’s liking but the idea behind having a website is to be unique.
But back to the essentials, you will need a blogging website and a landing page website at the very least. Your blogging website allows you to promote products using various “links” and your landing page sends traffic to specific items of value in exchange for their email address. Once you have a customer email address, that customer becomes your subscriber.
One of the aims of the game as an affiliate marketer is to build up a list of subscribers. Subscribers are all the people that click on your ads or links and provide you with their email address via your landing page in order to receive something you are offering.
Once you have a listing of subscribers it is important to consistently email them content that may be of value to them, as well as send them special offers that both help them in some way, and help you make possible sales.
In order to capture your leads (subscribers) and send them emails, you will need the service of an email marketing service provider.
Looking at the average cost of email marketing service providers, it depends on how many subscribers you have on your list.
- Subscriber lists of 2,500 – 5,000 cost around $300 – $350/year
- Subscriber lists of 10,000 – 50,0000 cost around $400-600/year
- For $1,500/year there will be no limit to the amount of subscribers on your list.
Personally, I use AWeber. I recently paid $247AUD to resubscribe for another year.
Surely, there are more essential tools I will need to start my affiliate marketing business?
Tracking is vital to ensure you get paid the commissions you deserve for all of your marketing efforts. It is also important to be able to identify where your customers are generated.
Personally, I have found advertising platform tracking codes paired up with AWeber reports cater for my current customer tracking needs. Perhaps in the future as I become more experienced, have a larger subscriber list, and I am selling more products – then maybe I will need to purchase specific tracking software – but so far (after being involved in the affiliate marketing game for only a year ) I’ve had no need for a more advanced type of tracking software.
I am also fortunate enough to be promoting a product with a company who provide a tracking system for me as part of their membership. This tracking ensures I receive my well-deserved commissions.
As I stated previously, my online marketing education provider provides me with tools and other resources I need to start and run my affiliate marketing business (with the exception of my email marketing service). Having said that, I do know the bare essentials required to start an affiliate marketing business. Those essentials are:
- A Niche
- Web host
- Email marketing service provider
- Tracking service.
